Last week illustration Friday had "farewell" as the chosen word for the week.
My friend Leila from South Africa was visiting NY and staying with me for a few days. She left on Thursday to Canada and she wanted to leave in a hot air balloon. So I draw it!

]]><![CDATA[The end of my SPARC residency]]>Tue, 23 Apr 2013 02:32:32 GMThttp://www.lauralvarez.com/1/post/2013/04/the-end-of-my-sparc-residency.htmlSince March I've been working on the SPARC residency (Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide) that it is a community arts engagement program that places artists-in-residence at senior centers across the five boroughs of New York City.  

I've been working in the Bronx, at Neighborhood SHOPP Leon Senior Center, where I taught them how to use ink, color pencils and paper to liberate their minds and exercise their imagination. (Many of them thought they didn't have any, but then realized they do). And they taught me many things too. We laughed, talked, enjoyed stories. We got to know each other and I’m going to miss them terribly now that the residency has ended.

Today we had the final exhibition and the book presentation. We worked in some stories based in their works of art. 
Amazing experience and amazing people.

It's been a while since the last time I posted something on Illustration Friday. 
This week a friend and I agreed we were gonna try to force ourselves to participate, despite our works, families, or problems, each week with an illustration. 

I think it's a great exercise to generate ideas and work with your imagination and creativity.
I love to find ideas I didn't know I could have, and make them real.

Here I am, at the People's Choice - CanvasPop 1197 Photo Exhibit. 
Last night it was the opening of this exhibition I'm part of, with my picture of the Edgar Allan Poe's Cottage I took this fall while a friend of mine was visiting me. This beautiful house is in a cute park in the Bronx and it's a very recommendable visit. 

Soho Gallery For Digital Art was hosting this show where we saw pretty amazing photos.
If you wanna have a look it will be  from 2-18-2013 through 2-22-2013 at 138 Sullivan St. NY.
