ARTIST STATEMENTI am an illustrator, author, designer, visual artist, muralist, community activist, and educator. My work is inspired by nature, tradition, life, change, immigration, and womanhood. I have a passion for calligraphy and often incorporate it into my work.
My artwork is characterized by multiplicity, repetition, and accumulation of elements, where each element contributes to the whole story that can only be told from the one to the many. Through my art, I strive to better understand myself and the world around me, as well as to engage with and contribute to my community. BIOGRAPHYLaura Alvarez is a multi-talented artist from Valencia, Spain who now lives in New York City. She's an illustrator, author, designer, muralist, community activist, and educator. Laura has been a teaching artist for numerous organizations and city agencies, and has touched many lives through the years thanks to the arts.
Laura is passionate about creating connections between her art and the community. She takes her artwork out of the studio and onto the streets, creating colorful designs on walls and step-streets in various countries and neighborhoods. She believes in involving the community in every mural she creates, so they feel empowered and heard about the art they see daily. Laura is a Co-Founder, Vice-President, and COO of BxArts Factory, a non-profit organization that makes art accessible to everyone in the Bronx. She is also on the board of Artbridge, a non-profit that empowers local artists to transform prominent urban spaces into gallery-quality exhibitions, focusing on New York City's 300+ miles of construction fencing and scaffolding. Laura has received several awards and grants that she has used to promote the arts among Bronx youths and to create work that starts a conversation about ecology, womanhood, racism, tradition, inequality, and immigration. In 2021, she published her first Children's Picture Book, "Eggies Adventures at Poe Cottage". Laura has exhibited her work all over Europe and New York, in both collective and solo shows. Her exhibitions usually include free programming and workshops, which she uses to spread her love for art and her mantra: "everyone is an artist". |
