ARTIST STATEMENTI am an illustrator, author, designer, visual artist, muralist, community activist, and educator. My work is inspired by nature, tradition, life, change, immigration, and womanhood. I have a passion for calligraphy and often incorporate it into my work.
My artwork is characterized by multiplicity, repetition, and accumulation of elements, where each element contributes to the whole story that can only be told from the one to the many. Through my art, I strive to better understand myself and the world around me, as well as to engage with and contribute to my community. BIOGRAPHYLaura Alvarez is a versatile artist from Valencia, Spain, based in The Bronx for almost 20 years. She works as an illustrator, muralist, graphic designer, author, and educator, making a significant impact on her community through her art. An award-winning artist, Laura uses her projects to spark conversations about ecology, womanhood, racism, tradition, inequality, and immigration.
Passionate about building community connections, Laura actively involves local residents in her mural projects, empowering them and giving them a voice. Her work draws inspiration from street art, graffiti, illustration, and Romanesque art. Laura has collaborated with brands such as Target, Optimum, and Cricket Wireless, as well as local organizations like The New York Botanical Garden, The Bronx Zoo, New York University, and Nos Quedamos/We Stay, along with city agencies like the New York City Housing Authority and the New York Department of Transportation. She is the co-founder, vice president, and chief operating officer of BxArts Factory, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making art accessible for everyone in the Bronx. Additionally, she serves on the board of ArtBridge, a nonprofit that empowers local artists to transform prominent urban spaces into gallery-quality exhibitions, specifically focusing on New York City’s extensive 300 miles of construction fencing and scaffolding. In 2021, Laura published her first children’s picture book, "Eggies Adventures at Poe Cottage." Her exhibitions, held across Europe and New York, often feature free workshops, reflecting her belief that “everyone is an artist.” |
