Highbridge Flowers Mural

Last week we finished a mural I was planning for a couple of months with WHEDco. The proposal was sent and approved, so we were able to create a massive step street mural in my beloved Bronx.

In the past years, some organizations and neighborhoods in the Bronx have started to fight back against the burden of being number 62 out of 62 counties in the health rank of New York.
Part of the #Not62 initiative have been the community gardens that have sprung around the borough, promoting healthy eating. One of the issues we face is the food deserts, where you have to travel in order to get fruits and vegetables, and when you find them they are expensive and their quality is not great.
These small gardens give the communities an alternative option, growing your own food, and at the same time they create community spaces where you get to know your neighbors and share time with them.
This step street mural is an homage to those gardens and at the same time will make fun and colorful the fact that you have to go up and down the stairs, promoting exercise.

Live Painting Fun

Last Saturday we had a blast. The first BxArts Factory Block pARTy was a success and we can't wait to repeat it next year.
I was live painting together with other 3 great artists. I chose Summer as the theme for the event and I always love seeing what other artists create from the same word or concept:
from a "healthy juice" to Nina Simone, Everyone did a great job.
Around 200 members of the community participated in the activities, talked to the artists and created amazing pieces of art.
I have to find a way to get more community members to come and paint live with us, it is very interesting to see everyone's process when creating. How some people sketch in pencil and then paint everything at the same time, others sketch and then fill each line like if it was a paint by numbers coloring page, or like me, that I jus go ahead and start layering colors until I figure out what to do :)

Bronx & Crafts: Art at the Bar Edition

Art at the Bar was created by BxArts Factory in 2016 as a once a year way to connect with your creative side while enjoying a great time in community. Our monthly Bronx & Crafts events were born from this awesome yearly summer tradition. Join us to pay homage to this fun way to connect! In this DIY style event participants will be painting on mini-canvases, creating inkblots and creating still life drawing.

Bronx & Crafts happens on the Third Thursday of every month. Each event features a different arts and craft project and theme. Participants will experience working with different mediums in a DIY style experience.
