Stay cool everyone! Kickstarter campaign is almost over! Get your book now! Bronx Bound Books is a bookstore on wheels aka a bookmobile. It is in the making, and will travel the streets of The Bronx to bring literature to the people. Bronx Bound Books is leaving no community behind. It will be a mobile bookstore able to travel throughout the borough. Especially to neighborhoods where it may be needed the most.
It has been years already, I met Latanya when she was part of the advisory committee of BxArts Factory. SInce then we have collaborated many times. When I was about to launch this Kickstarter campaign I wanted to include the opportunity of people giving back. There is a pledge where you can donate 15 books to Bronx Bound Books and that is accompanied by a book reading and a workshop. I am going to send them 10 books from the donations I got without a pledge, so follow my lead and help them get some Holiday reading books for the Bronx kids. On this Sunday morning I wanted to share some pictures of the process of creating the illustrations in this picture book. It takes a long time from the idea and concept until you are happy with the outcome. For the illustrations I tried different mediums and styles, until I found the one it felt right.
To work on the human characters, sometimes I use picture references. For Neil's character I decided to take pictures of myself doing the expressions I was looking for. When you don't have a model, internet can be a resource, but most of the times it takes longer to find those images than taking the picture yourself. I knew exactly what pose I was looking for, so it was a quick thing to do. After that I used those pictures to make sure the characters had a "natural" appearance. Let me know if you have any questions about the process!! Hello all! I want to share this raffle that will be available for 10 days, until the end of my Kickstarter campaign. Each dollar you donate will enter in a raffle giveaway contest where you can get:

We still have 15 days ahead of us, so now we need to make it to the stretch goal. If we make it to $10,000 I will do a limited edition of books in Spanish. I am really looking forward this, let's make it possible! "Eggie's Adventures at Poe Cottage" A Picture BookWith this picture book, children will learn about perseverance while discovering the Museum of Edgar Allan Poe located in the Bronx, NY.
The story is about a little squirrel named Eggie who is quite interested in the history of the cottage. He learns that his great grandfather was actually Edgar Allan Poe's best friend, which makes him want to be a helper to Neil, who is the caretaker of the house. Instead of helping, he keeps getting into trouble; until the day when Neil goes to the city and completely forgets he had a group of children coming to visit the cottage. Eggie steps up, and of course, saves the day! Thus the story is about not only the history of the cottage, but persistence as well; because if we don't get it right the first time, that doesn't mean it won't end up well, especially if we try something different... "Eggie’s Adventures at Poe Cottage" is a precious little picture book that seeks to encourage curiosity about the Edgar Allan Poe Museum and the famous writer and poet who lived in the borough of the Bronx around the mid-19th century. I think it is very important to cultivate a sense of pride about our neighborhoods. The Edgar Allan Poe Museum is a staple for tourists, but for the local population it is just a little landmark cottage at the edge of Poe Park. The goal of this book is to engage the imaginations of locals and tourists alike about the history of Edgar Allan Poe and the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. |
