This month is going to be a busy one. Just to say bye to 2013 I´ll have two exhibitions going on in NY at the same time.
December 4th we have the inauguration of the Wreath Interpretations, at the Arsenal Gallery 830 5th Avenue, at 64th Street. Come join us for the opening reception from 5.30 to 7.30 pm. NYC Parks celebrates the holiday season with its 31st annual exhibition of unique, unconventional wreaths. A diverse selection of 46 fine artists, horticulturalists, designers, and other spirited contributors enliven this ageless holiday symbol. Neck ties, rat traps, acorns, recycled plastic bags and forged steel are among the many and varied materials used to examine themes as diverse as zombie apocalypses and water conservation. This exhibition is sure to be an imaginative and enjoyable experience this year's holiday season. December 7th the exhibition Whimsical Winter Wonder... Lucy Aponte and myself curate this show that will charm and delight the spirit of the child or the child within. Sixteen emerging and established artists interpret a Whimsical Winter Wonder... We will have an opening reception and a panel discussion Dec 7th at 12pm. Poe Park Visitor Center Gallery. 2640 Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Last Saturday I was awarded with the Golden Trowel by Partnership for Parks.
In their own words... "The Golden Trowel award will recognize groups’ commitment to enacting change in neighborhood parks through superb community activism. This year’s Golden Trowel recipient from the Bronx is Friends of Soundview Park, led by Laura Alvarez. Since 2011, Laura Alvarez has been a dedicated volunteer with the Friends of Soundview Park. Alvarez has designed colorful promotional materials for group events, including the group’s logo. In the spring of 2011, she led a community painting project in Soundview depicting the waterfront park’s aquatic life. Alvarez has played a critical role in the development of the annual Soundview Park Summer Festival, which highlights the art and cultural programming. This year, Laura spearheaded Urban Nature Art, a series of workshops for high school students that explored the natural environment of the park through the arts." After this I just can say thank you Carlos, Melissa, Mary, Lucy, Jaime, Lon, all the volunteers that also make possible our events and programs. Thanks Parks, PFP and life to give me such opportunities. I'm part of great things going on in the Bronx, I'm proud of many people working hard to make our neighborhoods better like Nilka with G.I.V.E or Elizabeth with Boogie Down Rides. Inspirational, encouraging and empowering. New section on my website where you can see all the #DrawscaryOct illustrations I made.
