This year I had the privilege and luck to be part of Argonaut Resins boot at NY Comic Con. I painted live several pieces and some sold already, but if you missed it you can still get some at his website see them below!!
These are the pieces I customized this year for Argonaut Resins. Mariposa and Dragonfly are already at the NYC Comic-Con and I will join on Sunday painting live some more resin toys.
I can't wait to be there again! It's such a great atmosphere, the people, the costumes, art everywhere... It is a pretty cool experience. If you are going to be there on Sunday, come visit us at booth 404 at The Block. You won't be disappointed :) Today you can join me for the opening of the exhibition "Ad Astra" at Blick art materials store, 1 Bond Street, Soho, New York. It will start at 6 p.m. and it will go on until 8 p.m. You all know my relationship with space and stars. Going to the roof at night with my father to set up the telescope and find different planets, nebulas and star clusters, was always an adventure. Today I have a couple of [pieces I did as homage to Laika, the first animal sent to space, the first real cosmonaut. This Russian dog died in space, as well as many other animals sent after her before they started sending humans. I am exhausted. It's been an incredible experience to be part of the 2016 chashama Gala. Yesterday I painted over 250 words on a canvas, during 5 hours straight.
This unbelievable event takes place every year in the heart of NYC, 4 Times Square, where more than a hundred artists showcase or perform their art. I had a participatory performance, called Wall of Words, where people was asked to write a word on a paper, words that inspire them, that they feel identify with, or that they didn't like and wanted to get rid of it. It had a great acceptance and everyone was very excited to see their word written on the canvas. I had the most amazing helpers, Natalie and Yolanda, getting words from the attendees and helping me with the crowd management. I couldn't ask for better friends. This year I am part of the Sing for Hope Piano artists again. It will be at Owen Dolen and we have some events celebrating Art, Astronomy and Music. I hope to see you there Friday, June 10th and Friday, June 17th from 8 to 10pm.
What’s Up With The StarsUsing a combination of naked eye and telescopic views we will explain what is visible in the night sky, you will learn how to navigate it and will view select objects through a telescope. Visions of Sound Using astronomically relevant classical pieces of work, a pianist will play said pieces on the Sing For Hope piano while observers learn about the space. Sing For Hope Pianos For two weeks in June, they bring stunningly painted pianos – each a unique piece of art created by a different artist – to New York City’s parks, streets, and public spaces for anyone and everyone to play. The Sing for Hope Pianos inspire community engagement. My Recycled Bouquet of Flowers
FREE ART WORKSHOP Sunday, May 22nd. 11 to 2 p.m. Dome Playground in Brooklyn 38th St, Brooklyn, NY I will be facilitating a really fun up-cycling art workshop this Sunday. Come to Brooklyn to enjoy a creative day celebrating Spring! Dome PlaygroundSituated on the northeast corner of 38th Street and Dahill Road, Dome Playground is named in honor of community activists Charles (1904-1984) and Jessie Dome (1904-1987). Long-time residents of Borough Park, Brooklyn, the Domes devoted themselves to improving their community.
Art is Served by Laura Alvarez, 2015 May 14th I was part of a Dinner Without Agenda, organized by the Queens Museum. The purpose of this dinner where 10 artists and curators that don’t know each other meet, was to talk in an unstructured meeting, to start a conversation about how galleries and institutions influence your work. After that interesting night someone from the museum asked me to write a blog about my experience. You can find the whole article HERE. I want to thank the curator Miguel Luciano for inviting me, because it was a great experience. I hope more institutions would follow the Queens Museum example being more proactive with their communities. Two years ago I had the pleasure of being part of Women in Comics, the first exhibition of that kind in The Bronx. This August, we bring you the second part. Lots of artists, illustrations, comics and workshops will happen during this month at Poe Park Visitor Center.
I would like to invite everyone to the opening Saturday, August 1st, at 2640 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY. From 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. we will be enjoying the company of many female illustrators, writers, producers, film makers, artists, and we will have a panel discussion about the situation of the women in comics.
