For the past four years I have been collaborating with a Spanish non-for-profit organization Art i Més, from Gandia, Valencia, for their bi-annual publication ContArte. I created several of their cover illustrations and I also illustrated many of the wonderful stories. Through their writing workshops they bring the community together, an intergenerational space that gives a voice to anyone who wants to share it. They pick a specific theme to create those stories, they work during five months, weekly, to help each other so they can publish two compilations a year. But not only they publish the books, but put together several reading events, partner with a local radio to air the stories made into audiobooks, and give all their earnings to another local non-for-profit that helps kids with terminal illnesses. Last Saturday I was awarded with the Golden Trowel by Partnership for Parks. In their own words... "The Golden Trowel award will recognize groups’ commitment to enacting change in neighborhood parks through superb community activism. This year’s Golden Trowel recipient from the Bronx is Friends of Soundview Park, led by Laura Alvarez. Since 2011, Laura Alvarez has been a dedicated volunteer with the Friends of Soundview Park. Alvarez has designed colorful promotional materials for group events, including the group’s logo. In the spring of 2011, she led a community painting project in Soundview depicting the waterfront park’s aquatic life. Alvarez has played a critical role in the development of the annual Soundview Park Summer Festival, which highlights the art and cultural programming. This year, Laura spearheaded Urban Nature Art, a series of workshops for high school students that explored the natural environment of the park through the arts." After this I just can say thank you Carlos, Melissa, Mary, Lucy, Jaime, Lon, all the volunteers that also make possible our events and programs. Thanks Parks, PFP and life to give me such opportunities. I'm part of great things going on in the Bronx, I'm proud of many people working hard to make our neighborhoods better like Nilka with G.I.V.E or Elizabeth with Boogie Down Rides. Inspirational, encouraging and empowering.

And soon it will be published in their magazine.  “I will possess your heart”, a song by Death Cab For Cutie, is the inspiration for the 13th issue of Carpaccio Magazine. I participated with this hand-lettering drawing and with the series of dripping hearts I made some months ago together with one of my husband's poem The Hunter In a very circular moment, her figure repeated was. the wind blew without mercy, not knowing destiny, for me, a surprise had. Not too long it took For this Hunter to be bitten His hands were swollen up His heart poisoned and defeated. Her fangs, filled with poison, words of sweetness and seduction are, poisoning a man’s soul, Her first Hunter today, she’s ready for lunch… In seconds her poison ran through my veins leaving me useless and numb, whipped by her knowledge on how to destroy a man's soul... I really felt foolish and dumb. It felt like an eternity for her poison to slowly caused an effect all of a sudden life was an excuse something I felt to regret. It looked like the end and it really was without mercy she swallowed my heart slowly delighted by the flavor of my tears as I was dragged along with my hopes and fears... But destiny, as wonderful and mysterious as it is, and beginners luck showing the way, Distracted was this predator of day and night she had a weakness... that weak spot she never thought I would find… As I escaped from this ferocious beast and the path clearer and safer was Turning on that corner of freedom Temptation with me crashed another beautiful beast for this beginner to catch...       I've had a great surprise today.
I'm included in a very special coloring book is going to be published by Doodlers Anonymous. The reason for the book is to help the International Child Art Foundation. You can also collaborate buying it. This book is going to be given for free in the Family day of the Miami design district (December, 12th 2009). |
