Nature Quilt (2022) Jerome Gun Hill Business Improvement District and NY Department of Transportation Gun Hill Road and Jerome Avenue, Bronx, NY. Nature Quilt is a mural that represents the multiculturality of The Bronx and the Jerome-Gun Hill area. It is a patchwork of patterns with leaves, flowers, stars, bright colors and eyes mirroring the diversity of the community. It is designed to bring joy and happiness to the events that will take place in that plaza for a year. It will contrast with the dark asphalt around it and it mimics Nature, from the park just across the street. Created as part of an initiative of the Jerome Gun Hill Business Improvement District to beautify and bring to life an underutilized area, this mural brings some happiness to this corner of the Bronx, making the wait for the bus or your lunch break brighter. It was an awesome experience, where we invited the community to come on Sunday to paint and prep the area.
Highbridge Flowers Mural 168 St. between Edward L. Grant Hwy and Shakespeare Ave. WHEDco
In the past years, some organizations and neighborhoods in the Bronx have started to fight back against the burden of being number 62 out of 62 counties in the health rank of New York. Part of the #Not62 initiative have been the community gardens that have sprung around the borough, promoting healthy eating. One of the issues we face is the food deserts, where you have to travel in order to get fruits and vegetables, and when you find them they are expensive and their quality is not great. These small gardens give the communities an alternative option, growing your own food, and at the same time they create community spaces where you get to know your neighbors and share time with them. This step street mural is an homage to those gardens and at the same time will make fun and colorful the fact that you have to go up and down the stairs, promoting exercise.
Cross-Street-Stitches Mural At 176 St in The Bronx, NY (Btw Popham St & Undercliff Ave) Artbridge, NYC Department of Transportation & NYC Department of Health
I am a firm believer that tradition is very important in our lives. The Jerome area has a big immigrant and blue collar community. What they have in common is the manual labor, earning the bread with your hands. I always remember the older woman in my family working at home taking care of the families but also sewing. Creating those beautiful dresses for the children and adding embroidery to make them pretty. I want to beautify the neighborhood by adding that touch, create an cross-stitch pattern along the stairs remembering the old traditions, the handmade artisanal design in an era of technology and plastic.
