Around May there was an open call for a special show at @rockefellercenter and I decided to send a design to represent the Bronx. I took out flag and gave it a spin... They were asking about a representation of what NY is for you... I was selected from over a thousand submissions and some great artists are part of it. The flags will be up until August 16 at Rockefeller plaza. I consider The Bronx my home, and since I arrived from Spain in 2009, I've been part of this multicultural community. I got inspired by the Bronx flag, where a wreath encircles the Bronck family arms (founders of The Bronx). The shield of the family arms shows the face of the sun with rays displayed rising from the sea, signifying peace, liberty, and commerce. I transformed the rays into The BX, a familiar way Bronxites call their beloved borough. Hello all, as promised my latest project is up on my website. I uploaded all the paintings I worked on for the past couple of years and also the exhibition Woman Being: Mundo Interior. Artists in this exhibition revisit, re-imagine, appropriate and respond to iconography in noir that addresses current events, crime, urban life, gender roles, isolation and displacement through drawings, illustrations, painting, photography and video. Movies of this genre were characteristically shot in black and white, and featured stories involving femme fatales, doomed heroes or anti-heroes, and tough, cynical detectives. Other characteristics include low key or artificial lighting, scenes shot at night or under the rain, blurriness and voiced over narrations. The mood in noir films is often pessimistic, implying fear, treason or imminent danger.   Today you can join me for the opening of the exhibition "Ad Astra" at Blick art materials store, 1 Bond Street, Soho, New York. It will start at 6 p.m. and it will go on until 8 p.m.
You all know my relationship with space and stars. Going to the roof at night with my father to set up the telescope and find different planets, nebulas and star clusters, was always an adventure. Today I have a couple of [pieces I did as homage to Laika, the first animal sent to space, the first real cosmonaut. This Russian dog died in space, as well as many other animals sent after her before they started sending humans.  This August I had the opportunity to present some of my work at the New York Public Library. The Secret Life of the Clouds is a project I started a while ago, based in the idea that we don't really know what happens above the clouds. I imagine birds building cities in the sky having babies and living far from the noisy humans. Hoy have until August 31st to visit the exhibition, located at the Bronx Library Center, 310 East Kingsbridge Rd, The Bronx, NY. Many visitors have passed by leaving great reviews at the heritage center. This is the third time I exhibit at the Library and it's always a great experience. The staff is always amazing. I am so glad they put all the effort in the world to keep that place alive. |
